How do I leave with no money?

You can leave with nothing and still have somewhere to go that night. What the council must do, which benefits start quickly, and how to get some cash together.

You can leave with nothing. People do it every week in the UK, and there is a system for it, imperfect but real. Having no money changes the order you do things in and who you call first.

The night you leave

If there is abuse, your council's housing department has a legal duty towards you, and in England you are automatically in priority need under the Domestic Abuse Act 2021. You do not have to prove it with a police report. You go to the housing office (or call the out-of-hours number if it is late) and say you are homeless because of domestic abuse. Wales has similar protections. In Scotland councils must house anyone who is homeless through no fault of their own, which includes leaving an abusive partner.

Refuge is the other route. Spaces are found through the National Domestic Abuse Helpline (0808 2000 247, 24 hours) and are not paid for up front. The cost is met through housing benefit once you are in. Refuges take men and LGBT+ people too, though fewer spaces exist, and the Men's Advice Line (0808 801 0327) and Galop (0800 999 5428) know where they are.

A friend's sofa is a legitimate first night. It buys time.

The first fortnight

Three things, in roughly this order.

A bank account in your own name. Every major bank offers a basic account with no credit check and no charges. Open it online or in a branch your partner does not use. Go paperless.

A benefit claim. Universal Credit can be claimed the day you leave, as a single person, even if a joint claim was in your partner's name. Ask for an advance within the first days so you are not waiting five weeks. Tell them it is domestic abuse. It changes what they can do. If you have children, child benefit can be moved to you.

Your documents. Passport, birth certificates, National Insurance number. If you had to leave without them, you can get replacements, and councils and benefit offices know how to work with people who have nothing in hand. Do not go back for them alone.

Getting a little money together before you go

If you are planning rather than fleeing, small amounts add up: cashback at a supermarket on a card they do not check, a few pounds held by a friend, selling something that is yours. The free module Your phone, your money, your data goes through how to do this without it showing, because a partner who controls money usually watches it closely.

Separation is the most dangerous time

If your partner has ever frightened you, the weeks around leaving carry the highest risk, and having no money can push people into improvising. A plan reduces that. The National Domestic Abuse Helpline will build one with you.

What this might mean for you

Money is the reason people give most often for staying, and it is usually the most solvable one. The free module Leaving safely gives you a private place to build the plan in steps, with the practical list and the safety list side by side. The assessment starts with eight safety questions. The page on legal aid for domestic abuse covers legal costs.

Related questions

Where can I go tonight if I leave with no money?
If you are leaving because of abuse, your local council has a legal duty to house you. In England anyone homeless because of domestic abuse is automatically in priority need under the Domestic Abuse Act 2021. Wales has similar protection. In Scotland councils must house anyone who is unintentionally homeless. The National Domestic Abuse Helpline can also find refuge space, which is free at the point of need and funded through housing benefit.
Can I claim benefits straight away after leaving my partner?
Yes. You can make a new Universal Credit claim as a single person the day you leave, and ask for an advance payment within days rather than waiting five weeks. Tell the Jobcentre about domestic abuse: you can ask for a same-sex work coach and a private room, and some conditions can be relaxed.
What if my partner controls all the bank accounts?
Open a basic bank account in your own name. Every major UK bank offers one, with no credit check and no fees. Have statements sent by email to a new address, or go paperless. Ask Universal Credit to pay into the new account. A debt adviser or domestic abuse service can also help you deal with joint accounts and debts afterwards.
